Update on assignments
1. I've contacted the Elkton Methodist Church about the Phillies Chaplain speaking there. Hopefully I will hear back from them this afternoon. The story's deadline is Friday.
2. I've also contacted the Elkton library about the Tax Implications Program being held by H&R Block. I was told they'd call me back this afternoon with the name of someone at H&R Block that I can speak with. This story's deadline is Sunday.
3. As I am also taking classes for Winter Session, I have to get the "OK" from my professor to attend the arts lunch next week.
4. I still have to contact the author of the award-winning poem.
I've been keeping my editor, Katy, updated on where I stand with each assignment. She's very flexible and easy to work with.Things have been going smoothly so far.

New Assignments
I received an e-mail from my editor Katy yesterday with four new stories she'd like me to work on. Here's a look at them.
1. "Tax Implications For Your Small Business" is a free program to be held 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Elkton Central Library next Wednesday, Feb. 3. It is a program that will help owners of small businesses learn tax-saving strategies. Someone from H&R Block will be leading the program.
2. Rich Sparling, the Chaplain of the Philadelphia Phillies, will be speaking at the "Annual Joy of Faith Weekend" at Elkton United Methodist Church the weekend of Feb. 6.
3. "Tuesday Lunchlines" is a program that is held at the Elkton Arts Center every Tuesday at lunchtime. People just show up and bring poetry or writing they want to share, and they work on it during a brown-bag lunch (12-1 p.m.).
4. Local Student Wins Second Prize In National Poetry Contest
Some of the deadlines are this weekend. I'll be sure to update with how the articles have turned out.

Update on articles
The article I was assigned about the Diabetes Prevention Program will be published tomorrow, I was told by Katy a few days ago. The article was a little more than 400 words and covered the details of the program, as well as what participants could expect when they showed up.
The article about the book of places to visit in Maryland fell through. I contacted the main source, the publishing company, many times and failed to receive a response from them. The article was therefore unable to run.

My progress thus far
For my first article, about the diabetes prevention program, I actually attended one of the programs this past Wednesday morning. The program runs for nine weeks and is free to any resident of Cecil County or someone who works in Cecil County.
It focuses on teaching people how to prevent diabetes with healthy diet and exercise. I spoke with the program's two coordinators and collected information from the presentation given during the program. Everyone I spoke with was incredibly helpful and was very excited to get more press about the program.
The second article, about the book on places to visit in Maryland, I've contacted the book's publishing company a few times and am waiting to hear back from them. In the mean time, I've been doing research on the book.
Katy has been very flexible with deadlines, as I am taking two classes during this Winter Session, as well.

Intro
I started interning at the Cecil Whig about a week ago. My editor's name is Katy Ciamaricone. I am working for the Features desk. Katy is really great to work with and has been very helpful thus far. After sending my resume and clips to the Whig, she contacted me with two stories she wanted me to do.
The first article is about a diabetes prevention program that is being run free-of-charge for residents of Cecil County. The second article is about a book of places to visit in Maryland. A few of the places are near the location of the Whig.
I'll be updating periodically with articles I'm writing and what it's like working for the Cecil Whig.
